If there's one thing we can never quite predict in Britain, it's the weather! One minute we're enjoying warm sunshine, the next we're reaching for an umbrella, and before the day is out we're wondering if we should have also packed a scarf or sunglasses. Someone once said that the British weather gives us all four seasons before lunchtime!
In many ways, our prayer life can be a little like the British weather. There are times when prayer feels bright and uplifting. We sense God's presence, our words come easily, and our faith feels strong. At other times, prayer can feel cloudy and difficult. We may struggle to find the right words, feel distracted, or wonder if anyone is listening at all.
The good news is that God is present in every situation. Just as farmers trust that the crops are growing even when the skies are grey, we can trust that God is at work in our lives even when we cannot see it. Prayer is not about always feeling inspired; it is about faithfully turning towards God, day by day, in sunshine and in rain.
As a rural church community, we understand something about seasons, growth, and waiting. We know that seeds do not sprout overnight, that crops need tending, and that growth often happens quietly beneath the surface before it becomes visible. The same is true of our spiritual lives. God is often working in hidden ways, nurturing faith, hope and love within us.
Recently, I came across a simple prayer activity called "Go, Grow, Glow". It uses ordinary items that can easily be found in a garden, a field, or around the home. Why not create a small prayer station in a quiet corner of your home using a stick, a pot of soil, some seeds, and a candle?
Take your time with each part of the activity. There is no rush. Allow each action to become a prayer.
Go
Take a stick and snap it.
As you hear the crack of the wood, think about something in your life where you need God's help. Perhaps there is a worry weighing on your heart, a difficult decision to make, a relationship that needs healing, or a challenge that seems too large to face alone.
The snapped stick can remind us that we do not always have to be strong. God invites us to bring our weaknesses, fears, and concerns to Him. Nothing is too small to matter to God, and nothing is too great for His care.
Offer your concern to God and ask for His guidance, strength, and peace.
Grow
Take a seed and plant it in the soil.
As you gently cover it with earth, think about something you would like to see flourish. It may be your faith, your family, a friendship, our church community, a ministry, or a hope you have been carrying for some time.
Seeds require patience. They need nourishment, care, and time. Growth is often hidden before it becomes visible. In the same way, God works within us in ways we cannot always see. Small acts of kindness, regular prayer, faithful worship, and simple acts of service can all become part of God's work of growth in our lives.
Ask God to bless whatever you have planted in your heart and help it grow according to His will.
Glow
Light a candle.
Watch the flame for a moment and remember that Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." His light shines in the darkness, bringing hope, comfort, and direction.
The candle reminds us that Christ is present with us whatever situation we are experiencing. His light shines on our path when we feel uncertain. It warms us when life feels cold and difficult. It also reminds us that we are called to reflect His light to others through our words, actions, generosity, and love.
As you look at the candle, give thanks for God's faithfulness. Pray that Christ's light will shine in your life and through your life, bringing hope to those around you.
As another week begins, we may not know what the weather will bring. There will probably be sunshine, showers, and perhaps a few surprises along the way. The same may be true of life itself. Yet through every changing situation, God remains constant.
May we be people who Go to God with our burdens, Grow in faith and discipleship, and Glow with the light of Christ in our homes and communities.
And the next time the weather changes three times before lunch, perhaps let it remind us to pause for a moment and pray.
Blessings for the week ahead.
